The Jewish Quarter…

The Jewish Quarter proved to be a genuine surprise. Once you arrive, it feels like discovering another community within the city. We wandered the canals, photographing this quieter, deeply atmospheric part of Venice. Established in 1516, the Cannaregio district is the world’s oldest ghetto.

Its history spans Napoleonic liberation and the tragedies of the Second World War, evolving today into a vibrant cultural area with active synagogues, museums, and kosher establishments. Given the recent terrorist attacks on Jewish communities elsewhere, parts of the museum were heavily guarded by police and army presence while we were there a sobering reminder of the present intruding upon the past.
